Activities in Hill Country

Get out and experience nature while staying with at River Inn Resort! Check out one of our favorite local places for hiking in Hill Country - Lost Maples. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1980, the 2,208-acre park has picnic sites, camping, hiking trails, wildlife and birds. The terrain here can be steep and rugged, but the views are worth it. Enjoy rugged limestone canyons, grasslands, springs, and clear streams that surround this natural area. While at Lost Maples, be on the lookout for wild animals that inhabit the area—like gray fox, armadillo, raccoons, rock squirrels, javelin and white-tailed deer—which are all frequently spotted by park visitors.

Some favorite hikes in the park include a hike on the East trail to Monkey Rock, featuring a unique limestone outcrop. Plants growing on the cliff walls thrive on the water that comes from underground below the outcrop. During hotter times, explore the West Trail, which has less elevation then the East Trail and is next to a stream and foliage which provides welcome shade. When adventuring to Lost Maples, make sure to bring plenty of water, hiking boots are recommended and a walking stick will make climbing up and down the steep trails easier.

A favorite of visitors is to see the big tooth maple trees and the amazing colors of the maple leaves as they change in fall. Located about a half an hour drive from River Inn Resort, Lost Maples is an easy destination to witness the beauty of Texas Hill Country in its natural element.
